Overview

The okapi (/oʊˈkɑːpiː/; Okapia johnstoni), also known as the forest giraffe, Congolese giraffe, or zebra giraffe, is an artiodactyl mammal native to the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. Although the okapi has striped markings reminiscent of zebras, it is most closely related to the giraffe. The okapi and the giraffe are the only living members of the family Giraffidae.

Guiding Questions

Guiding Questions

  • Start off by looking for the basics: where are they located and how many are left in the wild. Are there any in captivity?
  • Move onto answering what is threatening their existence. Is it due to a loss of habitat? Is the animal being hunted? Explore what is happening to these animals.  What would happen to the ecosystem if they were to go extinct?
  • Research what measures are taking place to ensure these animal’s safety? Are there laws in a country fining from killing? Are there conservations or advocacy groups that are doing anything? If so, discuss these groups and how they are helping. What are things we can do to help this animal?
